TEAM KENYA have launched a Childrens Rights campaign in Ndhiwa . During her recent visit to Ndhiwa Trish Coles worked with Alfred Kaloo to set up a new project working with other community groups and partner schools . Trish introduced the ideas of the UK's   Every Child Matters initiaitve and the catchy title stuck, so now Ndhiwa has its very own ECM !

5 KEY AREAS :Schools will consider how they can improve school life for students in the following areas.

● Health

● Safety

● Enjoyment and Achievement

● Making a Positive Contribution

● Economic well being in the future.

Team Kenya's partner schools have agreed to reflect on their current educational practice and consider whether any aspects of management and teaching might be contravening internationally agreed rules on the convention of the  The Rights of the  Child (UNICEF).

The issue of child rights is very critical in this country, Kenya. The girl child is particularly vulnerable, especially in many parts of Western Kenya. Wtith the benefit of hindsight, it appears the only safe haven for the child is the school. You can imagine the child's frustration if school also turns out to be a danger zone. As surrogate parents, it is incumbent upon teachers and other stakeholders to ensure that children's individual differences and needs are identified and addressed accordingly.

Even though the Kenyan curriculum addresses human rights as an emerging social issue, a lot more needs to be done as the culture of impunity still exists in rural schools.Children go to school without proper career path, exposure to ICT and other learning tools.

I am a teacher at Advent Hill Primary School a faith-based school in Kajiado District in the Rift valley Province of Kenya. We intend to partner with Team-Kenya to share ideas and information on how to improve the welfare of learners both at school and at home. Ihave had a chance to meet one David Sabare, the headteacher of Pala Primary School and we realised that we share certain ethos that are pertinent to the welfare of children (read ECM)
We appreciate the efforts of Team Kenya at lifting the yoke of poverty, ignorance and disease though training and empowerment of disadvantaged communities. keep up the good work as we hope to partner with you in the near future.
