When was Team Kenya Founded?
Team Kenya was officially founded in 2008 by Valerie Wilson, a geography teacher and senior manager working in a secondary school in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. Before establishing Team Kenya, Valerie had been working with the Ndhiwa community since 1999, focusing on school partnerships and curriculum exchange.
Since 2008, the charity has built a strong relationship with the community in Ndhiwa, and Twende Pamoja. Together with Twende Pamoja, Team Kenya has transformed the lives of over 80,000 people in Ndhiwa, including 25,000 young girls.
What Does Team Kenya Do?
Our mission is to work with entire communities to champion gender equality, empowering girls in rural Kenya to shape their own bright futures. Creating lasting change is complex, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.
That’s why at Team Kenya, we listen closely to our partners, the Ndhiwa community, and the global research community. Together, we develop and manage projects that truly address local needs and align with impactful global initiatives.
We work with local primary schools, and the whole community that surrounds them to tackle the barriers that prevent girls from accessing quality education. We do this by working towards our three key priorities:
Quality Education for Girls
Girls gain access to and attain a good quality education and have relevant skills and knowledge to fully participate in economic, social and cultural life.
Economic Sustainability & Food Security
Families have improved food security and developed sustainable economic enterprises to support girls. Learn about Economic Sustainability and Food Security
Advocacy for Safe Communities
Girls and young women are equal and respected members of society who are safe at home, in school and in their community.
How Has Team Kenya Helped Communities in Ndhiwa?
Team Kenya has impacted on over 80,000 people since we were founded. We take great pride in monitoring and evaluating the impact of our work and using any lessons learned to enhance our activities.
We have empowered girls through education and football, supported health and wellbeing, encouraged entrepreneurship and sustainable practices, as well as helping women achieve financial independence, and strengthening community partnerships.
