Top Ten Achievements in Ten Years
#TeamKenya10 Guess what? It’s officially our 10th birthday this year. So, to celebrate, we’re going to shout about our top ten achievements since our lovely CEO, Valerie Wilson, founded us in 2008. 1. She lives in teachers’ accommodation and as a result stays three kilometres from her family. Alice has a husband and eight children; four boys and four girls who range in age from 13 to 30 years old. Claire is 24 years old and was born in Godbondo, a village a couple of miles away from Ndhiwa. Team Kenya’s Raising Achievement programme works alongside four schools to improve the quality of teaching. Enhancing the quality of teaching gives girls and boys the opportunity to perform more effectively in school, and as the name suggests… raise achievement! Koduogo Primary school has over 1,000 students and only 8 teachers, making class sizes of over 100 a common theme. One of the classes currently learns under a tree and those taught in classrooms are cramped with limited resources. Two years ago, Team Kenya invested 200,000 Kenyan Schillings (approximately £1,500) in a school business farm at the school. The motivation behind this was to generate income to contribute towards school improvements and to more effectively meet the need of girls. Team Kenya’s Aspire Scholarships programmes ensures that girls from particularly vulnerable backgrounds can access the education they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Plus, given that educated women tend to invest 90% of what they earn into their families, the benefits aren’t only experienced by the girls themselves. In the past, the programme has provided school fees and general support to girls through sponsorship. We have always taken a holistic, person-centred approach to development at Team Kenya. Over the last ten years we have seen that problems can rarely be tackled in isolation – a girls’ school fees may be paid, but she may fall ill, or be pulled out of school to look after her siblings. In 2015 we completed a comprehensive research project into the root causes of school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) in Ndhiwa and the most successful interventions.
