A huge thank you to England Lionesses and Olympique Lyonnais Féminin star Lucy Bronze, who kindly donated two signed shirts for auction to raise funds for Team Kenya! The items sold for just under £800, which will have a fantastic impact on Team Kenya’s work in Ndhiwa, western Kenya. The last ten days have been an adventure of physical strength, mental determination and emotion. From cycling 225km under the African Sun to meeting some of the most inspirational people I have ever met in Ndhiwa, it has been a journey that I will look back and cherish forever. As I landed in Nairobi, on my very first trip to Africa, I was full off anticipation and nerves as what to lay ahead. Although I have recently set myself some gruelling physical challenges, I am not normally one to travel alone and set off on an adventure with a group…
Read moreYour Favourite Team Kenya Memories!
As we are in our 10th Anniversary Year, we asked our supporters for their favourite Team Kenya memories. As always, our incredible supporters delivered! Here are a selection of our favourite memories that were shared: Hannah O’Gorman – “After volunteering for Newcastle University Team Kenya Society and doing lots of fundraising events to raise money to support Anatalia, one of the best memories was receiving a letter from her. It was so amazing to hear how our support has helped Anatalia become an educated, empowered and happy young woman.” Katie Wilkinson – “So hard to just choose one! On…

Congratulations to our heroic Kenya Cycle Challenge team, who tacked 230 kilometres of dusty, rocky dirt tracks and steep slopes whilst encountering giraffe, zebra, hyena and wildebeest on their way to Ndhiwa! The group travelled into Nairobi and all participants chose to stay at Wildebeest Eco Camp, a beautiful, sustainable tourism site. Here, the group met John Blissett of Willetts Safaris, who developed and coordinated the cycle. The adventure began in the small village of Talek which is near Narok, a town in South West Kenya with a population of approximately 40,000 people, mostly Maasai. The team settled into Crocodile…

Earlier this year, I visited Ndhiwa on a research and volunteering placement with Team Kenya, as part of my MA International Development and Education at Newcastle University. In a few weeks, I’ll be handing in my dissertation and putting on my Team Kenya vest for the Great North Run. So, as two very different finish lines creep nearer, it feels a good time to reflect on what it’s all for. Here’s what it’s like to be on placement in Ndhiwa… Karibuni Eco Cottages Like most Team Kenya volunteers, I stayed at Karibuni. This place is much more than accommodation. It…

Here is our full Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Report on the Brighter Futures programme and the impact of the programme in its first 18 months. Thanks go to our volunteer, Alyssa Koenig, who wrote the majority of this report using information collected by our implementation partners, NCEDP. Background Brighter Futures is a current community outreach project run by the Ndhiwa Community Empowerment and Development Project (NCEDP) and fully funded by partners Team Kenya UK, which aims to use football as a tool for engaging girls and boys in gender equality conversations to help reduce Gender Based Violence (GBV) and…
Read more18 Month Update: Brighter Futures
Our Brighter Futures programme uses mixed gender football as a vehicle to educate the community on issues, including gender-based violence and gender inequality. The programme initially provides interactive lessons to boys and girls at partner schools, before community outreach sessions are held to ensure that all groups within the community receive this vital education. Brighter Futures has now been operating for 18 months and evidence demonstrates that the programme is having a positive impact in reducing gender-based violence, child marriage and teenage pregnancies. In Ndhiwa, where Team Kenya works, only 15.7% of girls continue into secondary education – with gender-based…
Read moreTop Ten Achievements in Ten Years
#TeamKenya10 Guess what? It’s officially our 10th birthday this year. So, to celebrate, we’re going to shout about our top ten achievements since our lovely CEO, Valerie Wilson, founded us in 2008. 1. In the past decade, Team Kenya has impacted over 60,000 people with our programmes in Ndhiwa, including over 20,000 girls. 2. Our successful Raising Achievement programme – which works alongside schools to improve the quality of teaching and, you guessed it: raise achievement, is now being expanded to 28 schools. When we started this partnership in 2012, one partner school – Arina Primary, had no girls in…
