Raising Achievement in Ndhiwa!
Team Kenya’s Raising Achievement programme works alongside four schools to improve the quality of teaching. Enhancing the quality of teaching gives girls and boys the opportunity to perform more effectively in school, and as the name suggests… raise achievement! The programme has had a positive impact upon our partner schools, with each school experiencing more students completing primary education, rather than leaving school at some point in their primary years. One partner school, Arina Primary, had no girls in the final year of primary school when partnership with Team Kenya was established six years ago. This number has increased to…

Koduogo Primary school has over 1,000 students and only 8 teachers, making class sizes of over 100 a common theme. One of the classes currently learns under a tree and those taught in classrooms are cramped with limited resources. Two years ago, Team Kenya invested 200,000 Kenyan Schillings (approximately £1,500) in a school business farm at the school. The motivation behind this was to generate income to contribute towards school improvements and to more effectively meet the need of girls. Maize, bananas, soya beans and eucalyptus trees were planted, whilst sheep were purchased to do this. The school now has…

Team Kenya’s Aspire Scholarships programmes ensures that girls from particularly vulnerable backgrounds can access the education they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Plus, given that educated women tend to invest 90% of what they earn into their families, the benefits aren’t only experienced by the girls themselves. In the past, the programme has provided school fees and general support to girls through sponsorship. However, we are now empowering the mothers of poor girls through the development of women’s groups and entrepreneurial skills, such as sustainable agriculture training, beadwork training and small loans to enable women to establish small…

We have always taken a holistic, person-centred approach to development at Team Kenya. Over the last ten years we have seen that problems can rarely be tackled in isolation – a girls’ school fees may be paid, but she may fall ill, or be pulled out of school to look after her siblings. Taking this approach sometimes makes explaining what we do complicated – essentially, we want to keep girls in school, and we do this by supporting them in whatever way they need to be supported. For some girls this means providing extra care packages such as personal care…

In 2015 we completed a comprehensive research project into the root causes of school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) in Ndhiwa and the most successful interventions. Over 50% of girls in Ndhiwa drop out of primary school before completion and even fewer progress on to secondary school; families struggle to pay school fees and boys’ education is often prioritised over girls. Team Kenya works in partnership with primary schools in Ndhiwa to create girl-friendly environments and develop teaching practices that help to improve access to quality education for all girls. At the moment, Team Kenya provides girls with scholarships, through our Aspire Scholarships programme to allow them to progress on to secondary school and further education, which is beyond the financial reach of their families. Time for a…

Ndhiwa is a rural region in Kenya where the majority of the population is almost entirely dependent on subsistence farming. Over 63% live in extreme poverty and 50% of girls drop out of school before completion. Team Kenya has developed an agricultural demonstration site to deliver training to women that increases access to food, grows family incomes and improves access to primary and secondary school education for girls. Thanks to this programme, there are now more girls than boys completing primary school in our partner schools and every daughter of a trainee was able to go on to secondary school…
