At Team Kenya we try to take a positive approach in representing the people we work with. We know that girls and women living in Ndhiwa face tremendous difficulties, but we also know that they are strong, passionate people with the desire to work and help themselves and others – they are not helpless. You may notice many of our photographs show happy, smiling girls and positive images of our girls’ lives in Ndhiwa, this is intentional. However, we do also feel there is a place for the less positive side of our story, the need, the reason we exist….
Read moreWhy is there no literature about small NGO management?
Small NGOs make up the majority of the UK international development sector, yet there is very little research, literature or guidance about their management. In 2009/10 there were 163,763 voluntary organisations in the UK (NCVO), 53% of these were defined as Micro (income less than £10,000 per year according to the Charity Commission) and 31% were defined as Small (income of £10,000 – £100,000 according to the Charity Commission). Many of these small NGOs are run by people who in some cases have little experience in running a charity, just a hell of a lot of passion and commitment. Small NGO leaders are the…

Read moreCreating amazing memories
Fresh from school, I had hype for travel, to see different places and hopefully leave a mark that can never go unnoticed. It was never going to be a matter of travelling for me; I needed a plan and bang! A project idea came in mind; one that will be my purpose besides the craze that comes with travel in East Africa. I love working with children, so I tailored my project to inspiring and creating a memory in Ndhiwa’s youngsters. Many young people from rural Kenya have no crack to peek at the rest of the world. They mostly…

Read moreFocusing on girls and women to reduce poverty
Many of the world’s poorest people are women who must, as the primary family caretakers and producers of food, shoulder the burden of tilling land, grinding grain, carrying water and cooking. This is no easy burden. In Kenya, women can burn up to 85 percent of their daily calorie intake just fetching water. We live in a world in which women living in poverty face gross inequalities and injustice from birth to death. From poor education to poor nutrition to vulnerable and low pay employment, the sequence of discrimination that a woman may suffer during her entire life is unacceptable but all too common. Women earn…
