Saida is a 10 year old girl from Ndhiwa Hospital School pictured here with her grandmother receiving emergency support. Saida is an orphan; she is HIV positive and asthmatic. Her grandmother is very caring, but is also in poor health and has no work and no income and has therefore been desperately struggling to feed the family. Team Kenya and Twende Pamoja have been able to supply Saida with the medication she needs and her grandmother has had agricultural support (vegetable seedlings) as well as a range of basic needs to help her put food on the table. Georgina Gor Awino is 19 years old and has recently started studying Education with Science at Moi University in Eldoret. Georgina hopes that studying her diploma will help her to become a biology and chemistry teacher in the future. Erick Otieno been appointed as the new Agribusiness Manager at Karibuni Eco-Cottages. Erick has been a dedicated volunteer for Team Kenya’s implementation partners, Ndhiwa Community Empowerment and Development Project (NCEDP) for many years. Erick was supported with contributions towards his studies through school and college and is now determined to use the knowledge and skills he has acquired to contribute towards the development of his community. Jemima received agricultural training as a result of last year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge. The training empowered her to increase her income to 4.5 times its original level. In March this year, Jemima received agricultural training, funded by our wonderful supporters’ donations to last year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge. As a result of the training, Jemima has been able to embrace more efficient agricultural practices. Jemima has been able to increase her crop yields and her income, empowering her to provide for herself and her four grandchildren. Koduogo Primary school has over 1,000 students and only 8 teachers, making class sizes of over 100 a common theme. One of the classes currently learns under a tree and those taught in classrooms are cramped with limited resources. Two years ago, Team Kenya invested 200,000 Kenyan Schillings (approximately £1,500) in a school business farm at the school. The motivation behind this was to generate income to contribute towards school improvements and to more effectively meet the need of girls. We have always taken a holistic, person-centred approach to development at Team Kenya. Over the last ten years we have seen that problems can rarely be tackled in isolation – a girls’ school fees may be paid, but she may fall ill, or be pulled out of school to look after her siblings.
